Course Description:

This exciting five-part series will discuss the creation of a business and the impacts of business/personal income on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

Self-employment opportunities are only limited by one’s imagination. Home-based, computer-based and storefront opportunities allow the tailoring of a business to best suit one’s disabilities. At the same time, self-employment is a lot of work and requires balancing benefits and new income. Join us to see if a self-owned business is a good possibility for your client.

We will begin with a discussion about business creation, business format and the building of an employment team to support your client’s efforts.

A thorough discussion of the Social Security Administration (SSA) rules concerning self-employment, income reporting and accounting will cover the SSDI rules concerning self-employment income and its impact on SSDI benefits.

This will be followed by a discussion of all SSA rules concerning self-employment and its income on SSI benefits.

Healthcare is among the most important issues for any recipient of disability benefits who is considering a self-employment future. We will discuss how a new business income might affect your client’s Medicare and Medicaid, and how to maintain health benefits.

A brief pre- and post-session test will be offered to all participants to help us determine the effectiveness of the training and adjust materials for future presentations.
