SUMMARY:Small Business Webinar: SSDI and SSI and Self-Employment (Two-Part Event)
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of SSDI in March and SSI in April and how to pursue self-employment. This two-part series is presented by experts from Cornell University. Recordings will be available after each event. \nApril 15\, 2026: SSI and Self-Employment \nSSI is a very complex program. Categorical eligibility\, resource eligibility and income reporting can all be overwhelming for you (or your recipient). How does work impact benefits?  \nThis session will take you through the disability and financial eligibility criteria and follow up with the significant work incentives allowed by the SSI program. You will learn how benefits planning can be very effective when an SSI recipient becomes interested in work or has begun working.  \nAt this event\, you will learn:  \n\nAbout the “welfare” nature of the SSI program. \n\n\nHow to calculate an SSI payment. \n\n\nHow work incentives can protect cash payments. \n\nRegister for the Series Now! \nMarch 18\, 2026: SSDI and Self-Employment \nIf you receive (or work with recipients of) SSDI benefits\, did you know there are work incentives if you are interested in\, or begin to\, work?  \nThis session will take you through the basics of SSDI eligibility and all available work incentives\, such as:  \n\nthe Trial Work Period\,  \n\n\nthe Re-Entitlement Period\,  \n\n\nImpairment Related Work Expenses (IRWEs) and  \n\n\nSubsidies and Special Conditions. \n\nHave you (or your recipient) performed Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) in a month? Are you sure? Using the work incentives we can reduce “gross wages” to “countable wages” and find that you remain eligible for a cash SSDI payment.  \nAt this event\, you will learn:  \n\nAbout the disability standard of the SSDI program. \n\n\nHow to determine if your recipient’s wages are really SGA. \n\n\nAbout the progressive work incentives of the SSDI program. \n\nFor VR and other professionals: this series will be a great “primer” for the upcoming Self-Employment training that will be offered in June 2026.  \nASL Interpretation and Captioning will be provided. To make a reasonable accommodation request or if you have questions about this session\, please email Laura Thrasher at lthrasher@ndi-inc.org. Please allow at least 3-5 business days’ advance notice; last-minute requests will be accepted but may not be possible to fulfill. \nThe contents of this webinar were developed under grant H421F240198 from the U.S. Department of Education (Department). SUMMARY:Self-Employment Credential Course
DESCRIPTION:Five-part series: June 2\, 4\, 9\, 11 and 16 \nAll sessions will be held at 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET \n7.5 hours of CEU for Cornell Planners; CRCs to be determined \nWho should attend: \nBenefits planners\, VR counselors and others helping SSA disability recipients return to work via self-employment. \nCourse Description: \nThis exciting five-part series will discuss the creation of a business and the impacts of business/personal income on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. \nSelf-employment opportunities are only limited by one’s imagination. Home-based\, computer-based and storefront opportunities allow the tailoring of a business to best suit one’s disabilities. At the same time\, self-employment is a lot of work and requires balancing benefits and new income. Join us to see if a self-owned business is a good possibility for your client. \nWe will begin with a discussion about business creation\, business format and the building of an employment team to support your client’s efforts. \nA thorough discussion of the Social Security Administration (SSA) rules concerning self-employment\, income reporting and accounting will cover the SSDI rules concerning self-employment income and its impact on SSDI benefits. \nThis will be followed by a discussion of all SSA rules concerning self-employment and its income on SSI benefits. \nHealthcare is among the most important issues for any recipient of disability benefits who is considering a self-employment future. We will discuss how a new business income might affect your client’s Medicare and Medicaid\, and how to maintain health benefits. \nA brief pre- and post-session test will be offered to all participants to help us determine the effectiveness of the training and adjust materials for future presentations. \nRegister Now
